The Republican presidential candidate and former US president, Donald Trump, was seen being taken off stage by US Secret Service agents on Saturday after gunfire broke out during his speech at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
He had thin traces of blood on his face. In an evening statement, the Trump team reported that the president was "fine" and that he was "being checked out at a local medical facility." In addition, Donald Trump Jr. told ABC News that his father is "in good spirits" while continuing to be monitored by doctors. One audience member and a suspected gunman have died, according to the AP, which quoted Butler County district attorney Richard Goldinger.
There's another onlooker who is seriously hurt. Joe Biden, the president, condemned the bloodshed during remarks on Saturday night and earlier declared himself "grateful" that Trump is safe. With most opinion surveys showing them evenly balanced, Trump and Biden are embroiled in a close battle for the presidency. At the Republican National Convention, which begins in Milwaukee on Monday, Trump is expected to formally earn the Republican nomination.
