Biden withdraws: In response to growing requests from Democrats to halt his reelection campaign, President Joe Biden has declared he is withdrawing from the presidential contest.
He supported Kamala Harris, the vice president, as the party's new nominee. Following his lackluster showing at the CNN presidential debate in June, Biden was unable to persuade notable members of his own party that he can defeat outgoing President Donald Trump in November.
For the first time in decades, a US president is not seeking reelection. Since Biden is no longer running, individual delegates will have to choose the party's nominee, either on the convention floor in Chicago next month or during a virtual roll call that is currently slated for early August.
Trump responds: During a call with CNN minutes after Biden announced his exit from the race, Trump described Biden as “the worst president by far in the history of our country.”
