A river deity has requested that 5 people be sacrificed before a new 32-seater restroom facility can be commissioned, therefore residents of Ampabame No-1 in the Ashanti Region are unable to use it.
Near the facility, a priestess of the Tano gods—guardians of the Bomofia stream—told Nhyira FM that the gods are irate because locals are dumping trash into the stream.
She added that the placement of a septic tank for the facility has angered the gods.
In the Atwima Kwanwoma district of Ashanti, the Ampabame community self-help toilet project was launched in 2005.
Due of financial limitations, it took 15 years to finish.
After a previous commissioning, Assembly Member for the Area Richard Ofosuhene stated that due to the shrine's requirement for human sacrifice, patronage of the restroom facility was low and it had to be locked up.
The Tano shrine is within walking distance of the 32-seat restroom facility, which is located beside the Bomofia stream.
The amount of garbage in the heavily polluted Bomofia stream makes it appear choked.
The bulk of the people rely on the Bomofia stream for their domestic water needs, yet obstinate residents continue to pollute it in spite of its value, Chief Kojo Acheampong, the chairman of the unit committee, voiced concern.
The Tano gods' priestess informed our news crew that the facility cannot be used without the necessary human sacrifice after what appeared to be an hour of discussions with the gods.
The assemblyman stated that in order to carry out the required ceremonies, he will collaborate with certain local elders.
We have listened to her and will take the necessary steps to re-commission the plant because we cannot abandon it.
If constructed, the 32-seat facility will be the second set of public restrooms in the town, which will accommodate a greater population.
